Matt Harvey absent from Mets workout, says he was stuck in traffic

Matt Harvey press conference

BaronMatt Harvey was noticeably absent from the Mets workout at Citi Field on Tuesday.

And it would seem the Mets have limited information as to his whereabouts.

Sandy Alderson said on Tuesday afternoon Harvey was indeed unaccounted for during today’s workout, and there was a limited explanation as to why he was not present.

Alderson labeled Tuesday’s workout as mandatory, but said he only had limited information as to the reason why Harvey wasn’t at the workout, and would not comment further.

Harvey was stuck in traffic, Terry Collins explained on Tuesday, although Collins said it wasn’t necessarily an excused absence.

“This is minor,” Collins told ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin. “This isn’t college, where he’s going to miss the first quarter of a football game. I’m going to take care of it in-house. I deal with it one way. The players deal with it another way. He’s going to get fined. It’s no big deal. He’s going to continue to pitch. He f—– up. People do that. He feels bad. The players will take care of it on their own. We don’t need it. We need to try to stay as positive as we can.”

Collins told Harvey to not come to the ballpark, but Harvey showed up anyway.

Harvey acknowledged to the media he made a mistake not being with his team on Tuesday.

“Obviously today was not the greatest. The last thing I ever want to do is not be with my team. There’s no excuse. I screwed up. I just truly screwed up.”” he said in a brief statement.

Collins said the right-hander will be fined, and hinted later reporters this was more of a matter of tardiness than it was a traffic situation.

Asked about Harvey’s absence, Mets captain David Wright said, “you’ll have to talk to Matt. I am concerned about the guys who are here. The guys who are here had a great workout.”

Harvey is still scheduled to start game three of the National League Division Series on Monday at Citi Field.

“Limited information”?
The saga goes on. Let’s just hope he is somewhere warm (LA), and resting up and not with Scott Boras.
