Mets may need some help for home field advantage in the NLDS

BaronSuddenly, the Mets may need some help from the Padres.

The Dodgers defeated the Padres on Friday night in Los Angeles, giving them a 1/2 game lead over the Mets for home field advantage in the Division Series, which begins next Friday.

As of today, game one would be at Dodger Stadium.

The Mets were rained out on Friday, and will play a split doubleheader on Saturday.

Here are the possible scenarios for Saturday…

  • The Mets would need to win one of Saturday’s games against the Nationals and the Padres would need to defeat the Dodgers today in Los Angeles for the Mets to re-gain control over home field advantage with one game to go in the regular season tomorrow, as they would have identical records heading into Sunday with the Mets holding the tiebreaker.
  • If the Mets split their doubleheader with the Nationals and the Dodgers defeat the Padres, the Mets would be one game behind the Dodgers with one game to go, needing to win Sunday and for the Dodgers to lose to tie and win home field advantage.
  • If the Mets sweep their doubleheader and the Padres defeat the Dodgers in Saturday, the Mets would clinch home field advantage in the Division Series, as that would put the Mets up one game plus the tiebreaker with one to go.
  • If the Mets get swept in their doubleheader and the Dodgers defeat the Padres on Saturday, the Dodgers will clinch home field advantage, as the Mets would be down two games with one to go.
  • If the Mets get swept in their doubleheader and the Dodgers lose to the Padres on Saturday, the Mets would be one game behind the Dodgers with one game to go, needing to win Sunday and for the Dodgers to lose to tie and win home field advantage with the tiebreaker.
  • If the Mets sweep the Nationals in all three games, they will win home field advantage regardless of what the Dodgers do the rest of the weekend.

If the Mets sweep the 3 game series…don’t they get home field advantage even if they Dodgers win both of their remaining games (by virtue of the tiebreaker)? Doesn’t that mean they still control their destiny? Win all 3 and you’re in.

Has Collins been so busy celebrating that he didn’t know the Mets had to win a few more games to get home field? Playing the second string and fooling with the pitching cost them the 3 games in Phillie. Now they have to win 2 of 3 against the Nats. Weather being the way it is who knows when they will play and then what?
Tough times ahead. All we can hope for us that the pitcher can come through and be permitted to pitch 7-8 innings otherwise it’s bigger trouble.
