Sean Gilmartin named Thursday’s starter
Sean Gilmartin has had a season full of firsts in his professional career, and on Thursday he will experience another one.
Terry Collins has named Gilmartin his starting pitcher in Thursday’s series finale against the Phillies. Tim Stauffer will follow Gilmartin soon thereafter.
Gilmartin is starting in place of Steven Matz, who was diagnosed with back spasms and hopes to be able to pitch this weekend against the Nationals, weather permitting.
Gilmartin was primarily a starting pitcher throughout his professional career before being taken by the Mets in the Rule 5 draft last December. He’s made 79 starts in the minor leagues with only one relief appearance.
He went a combined 9-7 with a 3.71 ERA in 26 starts between Double-A New Britain and Triple-A Rochester in the Twins organization in 2014.
Gilmartin has made 12 appearances of two innings or more in 2015 for the Mets, posting a 1.69 ERA in those games combined.
