Dario Alvarez unlikely to return in the regular season

Dario Alvarez 1 slice

On Tuesday night against the Marlins, Dario Alvarez strained his groin while pitching in the ninth inning.

On Friday afternoon, Terry Collins said it was unlikely Alvarez would pitch again during the regular season.

But Collins said Alvarez has departed for the team’s minor league complex in Port St. Lucie to rehab his injured groin with hopes he could return at some point in October.

Alvarez has allowed four earned runs in 2 2/3 innings since being promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas in early September.

Before his troubled outing on Tuesday, Alvarez had retired all five left-handed hitters he had faced.
