Steven Matz to throw 25 pitches in his rehab appearance on Saturday
Steven Matz remains on course to begin his rehab assignment on Saturday with the St. Lucie Mets.
He will face the Jupiter Hammerheads at Roger Dean Stadium at 6:35 PM, and is expected to throw no more than 25 pitches in the game, followed by 15 pitches in the bullpen, Terry Collins said on Friday.
Collins said Matz will not be activated from the disabled list until he demonstrates he can throw 90 pitches.
Presumably, he will throw 50-60 pitches in his next rehab start next week, followed by 70-80 the following start, which should be 11 days from now. That means, a full outing won’t take place until August 31, assuming he doesn’t suffer any setbacks.
Matz wasn’t expected to return until September anyway. Based on this schedule, Matz is projected to be reinserted into the Mets rotation on Saturday, September 5 when the Mets face the Marlins in Miami. Of course, that’s speculative, but it seems like a realistic target date for his return if he makes it through his rehab assignment ok.
He has been on the disabled list since July 10 with a torn lat muscle on his left side.
