Michael Cuddyer’s knee is acting up, but he’s available on Tuesday

BaronMichael Cuddyer went 2-for-4 in Monday’s 3-0 win. It was his second consecutive start after not starting the four previous games due to an achy left knee.

But on Tuesday afternoon, Terry Collins said Cuddyer’s knee was acting up on him, so it was decided the left fielder would get Tuesday off.

“Michael’s knee has been acting up,” Collins said. “He’s ok to play. I know it’s probably a little sore after playing on it for a couple of days. That had a little something to do with it.”

Cuddyer received a cortisone injection in his knee last Wednesday.

In talking with people close to the team over the last week, it sounds like this injury is going to be something both Cuddyer and the team have to manage through the rest of the year. This isn’t simply soreness, and it sounds like it’s not a meniscus issue either, but something is going on that doesn’t seem is going to heal in a short period of time. It’s a new injury, and not something which has affected him since his slump started in early June.

Presumably, they could use the All-Star break to see if the soreness improves. The problem is, if he needs to miss one or two games a week because of this, they’ll have to consider putting him on the disabled list and get an extra usable body on the roster.
