Mets will not mortgage their future to acquire offense

The Mets could be reaching a new level of desperation with their offense, or lack there of.

Four position players are now on the disabled list. To date, none of them have returned and there is still no certain timetable for that to happen for any of them.

12 players in total are sidelined, and that doesn’t include Jenrry Mejia who is currently on the restricted list.

That’s left the Mets with a revolving door of what really can be considered as minor league players manning third base, lightening in a bottle at second base, a make-shift bullpen, arguably the least productive bench in the game, and one huge roll of the dice as the Mets walk a fine line with their young starting pitching with zero margin for error.

The Mets offense needs an injection of major league talent, and they need help fast.

The club knows this isn’t sustainable. But while multiple club sources told Kevin Kernan of the New York Post the team will not mortgage their future to acquire offense, that doesn’t mean there aren’t players out there who can’t at least help lengthen the lineup at a lesser cost.

In holding their bigger chips, they could be automatically eliminated from the category containing the Todd Frazier’s, Troy Tulowitzki’s, and other top-tiered bats in the league. That’s reasonable, considering the foundation of their entire plan for the organization is based on precisely what other teams want for their core assets.

But that shouldn’t take them out of the category of players containing Ben Zobrist, or other bats who are in the last year of their contracts. There are also the lesser moves which can be made to fortify their bench and give them some immediate depth on the 25-man roster.

They may not be the sexiest moves on the planet, but certainly moves to provide another dimension from the light hitting, swing-and-miss group they’re currently pinning their expectations on.

For now, Terry Collins seems resigned to the roster he has and managing the injuries as they come.

“We just have to deal with it,” Collins said.

  1. “We” just don’t want to deal with it anymore!
What kind of manager flip flops, almost 180 degrees every other day, with no success or solution in either flip or flop, shows such indecision, convoluted crappy lineup, and STILL has his job?
A PUPPET manager. There is NO WAY Terry is master minding this constant confusion. It’s gotta be coming from Sandy- because no GM would put up with this insipid chaos.
