Early last week, there was hope among the Mets David Wright could return by their upcoming weekend series against the Phillies in Philadelphia.
However, as the days passed, Sandy Alderson felt such a return might seem, ” aggressive,” as Wright was only running at a maximum of 70 percent during drills at the team’s minor league complex in Port St. Lucie.
A return by this weekend now seems unlikely, as Wright was off for several days and did not resume baseball activities until the last day or so, and his hamstring is still not 100 percent.
“It’s just hard to say,” Alderson said, according to Zack Braziller of the New York Post. “He could be a week away, could be 10 days away. Until he gets into a game situation and feels confident with the leg, we’re not going to know.”
Alderson said it would be up to five days after the leg is 100 percent before they consider activating Wright.
“We haven’t gotten to that threshold yet,” Alderson explained.
Meanwhile, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York says its most likely Wright would return after the Mets return home from Chicago for their series against the Brewers.
On Tuesday afternoon, Terry Collins said while there’s still no definitive timetable for Wright to return, he felt really good today and the hope is Wright would get into a rehab game sometime this weekend.
Wright will run the bases again on Thursday, Collins said.
Last week, Assistant GM John Ricco said the club will take things conservatively with Wright, and understandably so. Despite their struggles, the team is still in first place and it’s more important to maximize Wright’s time when he’s 100 percent than risk having him out again by rushing him back.
Having said that, they’re now clearly feeling the effects by not having his bat in the lineup. They were getting adequate production at third base for the first week and a half from Eric Campbell, but now they’ve shifted gears with hopes Daniel Murphy can hold the position down and Dilson Herrera can pick up the production at second base. They’re trying to find a way to replace Wright, but this clearly demonstrates how valuable he is when healthy and firing on all cylinders.
Wright has been on the 15-day disabled list since April 15.
