Mets select the contract of Daniel Muno, option Rafael Montero to Las Vegas

Michael BaronThe Mets have officially trimmed their eight-man bullpen to seven and added some much needed depth to the bench.

On Friday, the Mets announced they selected the contract of INF Daniel Muno from Triple-A Las Vegas.

The 40-man roster is now completely full.

To make room on the active roster for Muno, the Mets optioned RHP Rafael Montero to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Montero really fought himself during his time with the Mets early on this year. He looks like a completely different pitcher than what he displayed during his run for the fifth starter spot late in camp, as he seemed to lose faith in his breaking pitches out of the bullpen.

As I wrote this morning, going down to the minors to hit the reset button and build confidence – especially in his off-speed – might be the best medicine for him right now. And, that will allow the Mets to better evaluate where Montero ultimately fits on their pitching staff, if at all.

As for Muno, he is a switch hitter with a little power and a lot of speed. He profiles more as a second baseman but can play shortstop and third base as needed, and he has a propensity to get on-base with a great eye at the plate. He impressed team brass during Spring Training, and now he becomes a very versatile player at Terry Collins’ disposal.

Muno is the first player drafted by Sandy Alderson’s front office to make the big leagues with the Mets. He hit .259 with 13 doubles, 14 home runs and 62 RBI in 117 games for Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League in 2014.

He batted .327 with one double, one triple, one home run and five RBI in 27 spring training games.

  2. Yea he definitely became a one dimensional pitcher when he got in trouble same problem as Noah.

Don’t like how we keep tossing this guy around though. Would like to see him in one role at one level for awhile, don’t want to screw with someone who seems to have a good talent

  3. Montero needs to man up – he’s behaving the same way he did when he started last year – so his issue is maturity, and obviously needs time in AAA. Love the Muno addition – helps the bench, keeps Reynolds playing every day in AAA. Let’s go Mets!
