Steven Matz is not feeling better, and his NLDS roster spot is growing more doubtful

BaronSteven Matz’s status for the Division Series continues to grow more in doubt with each passing day.

Terry Collins said on Friday afternoon Matz is visiting with team doctors now and is not with the club.

He said Matz is not feeling much better, and is therefore doubtful to pitch as planned against the Nationals this weekend.

The Mets could send Matz to the Instructional League in Florida to get some innings in next week, which could still be a viable test to determine his health for a potential game four start, which would not be until Tuesday, October 13.

Sandy Alderson said Matz’s inability to pitch weekend would not affect his playoff status, although he admitted there is increased concern now that Matz hasn’t begun to feel better.

Alderson admitted to downplaying Matz’s injury out of hope it would resolve itself quickly.

“The concern level has definitely gone up,” Alderson said on Friday. “I probably downplayed it too much at the outset.”

Collins was hopeful Matz would get one outing before the conclusion of there regular season, and has suggested they could leave him off the playoff roster if he is unable to prove he is healthy and can recover.

The reason they would leave him off the Division Series roster is because if he is on and becomes injured and has to be removed, he would become ineligible to return for the National League Championship Series.

The Mets have said they were still debating the fourth starter spot in the playoff rotation, and it was between Matz and Bartolo Colon.

But considering Jon Niese’s audition in the bullpen hasn’t gone particularly well, they could conceivably consider him for the rotation and put Colon in the bullpen, which presumably would be a better matchup against the Dodgers left-handed hitters in Adrian Gonzalez, Chase Utley and Corey Seager.

Matz originally injured his back sleeping awkwardly on a sofa Monday night in Philadelphia.

Never a dull moment with the Mets- EVER!

What an idiot.

I’m starting to think Mr. Matz is injury prone. Hopefully he will make a miraculous recovery and be able to pitch in the playoffs this year. But it’s becoming more apparent he likely will not be available.
