The Mets have another believer: Jose Reyes.
The former Met shortstop told Steve Politi of the Star Ledger on Thursday he believes the Mets have a chance to win the World Series, should the Mets reach the playoffs and get that far.
“No question, they can (win it all),” Reyes said. “With the way they’re pitching? You see the pitching staff they have, they’re unbelievable. They’re very good, man. They’re very good. If they can find away to score three or four (runs) a game, they’ll be very dangerous.”
Four runs is the magic number for the Mets, thanks to the team’s 3.18 ERA, which is good for second in all of baseball. They’re 45-7 when they score four or more runs in a game.
Reyes, who still lives on Long Island and still has many friends inside the Mets organization, is thrilled for the fanbase that they can finally experience what could be happening with this club.
The Mets have won 11 of their last 13 games and have gained 7 1/2 games on the Nationals to be 4 1/2 games ahead of them as play opens on Friday.
“I feel happy (for the fans),” Reyes said. “The fan base in New York, they’ve been waiting for this kind of moment for a long time. Now (the Mets) have the opportunity to do something special, they’ve been really supporting the team.
“This is the first time I’ve seen Citi Field like this. I’ve seen that atmosphere in Shea Stadium, but not here. That’s good to see.”
Unfortunately for Reyes, and really the Mets and the fanbase, he can’t be a part of something that seems so special with his former club.
Reyes recently cleared trade waivers, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. But it remains unlikely the Mets will entertain bringing the 32-year-old Reyes and the $55 million he is owed back home.
One response to “Jose Reyes believes the Mets can win the World Series”
Reyes hasn’t been much above average—offensively or defensively—since 2013. He’s on the downside of his career and should not be brought back.
