With Travis d’Arnaud’s playing time increasing, the Mets have decided to ensure Kevin Plawecki continues to get regular playing time.
As such, the Mets optioned Plawecki to Triple-A Las Vegas and recalled Anthony Recker to replace him on the roster.
Plawecki performed admirably for the Mets during d’Arnaud’s two extended absences, albeit in a premature manner. He showed at times he was a capable big leaguer hitter, but it’s clear he needs a little more polishing in the minor leagues, both with the bat and behind the plate.
Still, he showed the club he will be a quality big league catcher. He proved surprisingly mature, and he worked well with the pitching staff.
But there’s only one place he can get the at-bats and reps behind the plate he needs, and that’s not in the big leagues as d’Arnaud’s understudy.
