Steven Matz tentatively scheduled to begin rehab assignment on Saturday

Steven Matz continues to progress in his rehab from a torn lat muscle at the team’s minor league complex in Port St. Lucie.

On Monday afternoon at Citi Field, Sandy Alderson said Matz is tentatively scheduled to begin a rehab assignment on Saturday with Single-A St. Lucie.

Alderson said Matz will begin with a 25-pitch limit on Saturday, assuming he remain on target for that start, with an eye on returning September 1.

Originally, the plan was for Matz to be added to the rotation to form a six-man rotation in an effort to limit the innings of the young starters. However, on Monday Alderson said the Mets may not stay strict to a six-man rotation in an effort to be as competitive as possible in certain matchups down the stretch of a pennant race.

Matz has been on the 15-day disabled list since July 8.

Omg, only 25 pitches⁉️ Stingy….hope he’s ok? And can go through the first inning.
