Could Michael Conforto avoid a demotion on Monday?

Despite losing two out of three games to the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend, the Mets remained 1 1/2 games ahead of the Nationals for the lead in the National League East.

With Michael Cuddyer returning on Monday in New York, it seemed logical to conclude he would replace Eric Campbell or Michael Conforto on the roster.

After Sunday’s 4-3 loss in St. Petersburg, Sandy Alderson said the club intends to carry the best 25 players on the roster in the midst of their current pennant race.

“Our mindset is we want the best 25 players we can put on the field,” Alderson explained. “Issues of development, etc., are secondary to whether anybody can help us now. That’s all relative based on who’s doing what and comparisons among players.”

As such, it seems the Mets are strongly considering retaining Conforto and optioning Campbell, at least for now.

The Mets could be faced with another roster decision in the near-term, as they would have to make room for David Wright on the active roster if he gets through his forthcoming rehab assignment, which starts tomorrow in Port St. Lucie.

That could mean the Mets might eventually option Conforto anyway. But for now, Conforto is clearly the better player to Campbell, even though he has looked overmatched at times recently.

There are also business issues with optioning Conforto right now, which you can read here.
