The light at the end of the tunnel is getting larger for the Mets captain.
David Wright, who has returned to Tradition Field to continue working his way back from symptoms related to spinal stenosis, spent the morning on the field hitting, fielding and running under the watchful eyes of Terry Collins.
On Tuesday, Collins said Wright will perform drills on the field for five consecutive days, and if he doesn’t suffer any setbacks, he could begin a rehab assignment shortly thereafter.
On Thursday, Wright told Kevin Kernan of the New York Post he expects to begin that rehab assignment on Monday when the St. Lucie Mets take on the Fort Myers Miracle at Tradition Field at 6:30 PM.
It’s still not clear when Wright will be able to return to the Mets. And, the schedule Collins outlined earlier this week is under the assumption he will not suffer any setbacks. Assuming Wright’s rehab assignment goes smoothly, he could return by September 1, if not sooner.
Wright is is hitting .333/.371/.424 with a home run and four RBI in 35 plate appearances this season. He has been on the disabled list since April 15.
