The Nationals have dropped 14 of their last 23 games and 4 1/2 games in the National League East into second place, one game behind the Mets entering play on Wednesday.
Still, Nationals OF Jayson Werth’s confidence is high, and he believes in his club’s chances to eventually return to first place and win the National League East.
“I think it’s a matter of time, really. We’re a great second half team. We’ve been playing, half our team has been hurt all year,” Werth explained to the Washington Post after the Nationals 5-3 win over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. “That’s the reality of it. When we all get back we’re right there, in first place. We’re a game out now. But I think going forward we can get all back healthy and get rolling and it’s our division to lose.”
Well, the Mets have been playing with half their team hurt, too. And, after looking at the standings, it appears it is the Mets division to lose, not the Nationals.
In fairness, it would be alarming if the Nationals weren’t confident in their chances.
Still, for a team which has yet to dust the Mets and the rest of the division for that matter as they were expected to, it’s a little premature to suggest anyone has won the National League East in a one-game race, especially for the team currently in second place.
One response to “‘It’s our division to lose,’ says Jayson Werth”
Totally agree. The Mets’ losses have been more severe on offense than the Nats. Perhaps Werth is trying to buck himself up? Because he hasn’t brought anything special that perhaps the Nats and their fans were expecting from him. Should be a good race from both teams, but I favor the Mets for their stronger pitching.
