Yoenis Cespedes wants to be a Met for a ‘long, long time’

Yoenis Cespedes, Bartolo Colon

Rich MacLeodNew Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes has only played three games with this team, and yet he’s already made an impact. Not only has he brought immense talent with his power, speed and aggressiveness, but Cespedes has also brought a confidence, swagger and attitude to this Mets team has been lacking for years.

Cespedes must be released from his contract five days after the World Series, and if the Mets do not reach an agreement on a contract extension by then, they will likely lose him to another team as they will be unable to re-sign him until May 15, 2016.

There has already been a lot of talk from fans, myself included, about hoping that the Mets front office decides to keep Cespedes here for the long haul, rather than just these next few months. Cespedes spoke to this with reporters prior to Tuesday’s game, saying that while he doesn’t know what the front office is thinking, he hopes to be a Met for a “long, long time.”

It’s very possible that Cespedes is giving a diplomatic answer here and may very well just want to go wherever he’ll get paid the most–which you couldn’t blame him for–but this comment at least brings some hope that after just a few games he experienced in front of an electrified New York crowd that he wants to stay here and be part of the solution for years to come.

It’s been reported in the last week that the Tigers would look to bring back Cespedes after trading him to the Mets in the upcoming offseason, however now that Dave Dombrowski is out as GM in Detroit, you wonder if things could change under a new regime.

There’s no way of knowing if Cespedes truly wants to stay here long-term or if the Mets will do what it takes to make that happen.

He could always waive the stipulation in his contract, which forces his release of talks get far enough and there’s mutual interest leading up to the deadline, but that’s merely speculative right now.

One thing is for certain: He’s a Met right now, and I couldn’t be happier about it.

One response to “Yoenis Cespedes wants to be a Met for a ‘long, long time’”

  1. The mets have 65 million tied up between lagares, wright, cuddyer, grandy and Niese next year, all who should stick around. Then a fair estimate of the arbitration for Duda is 8 million, Harvey pre Arb 5 million, familia closer status 3 million and bringing murph back 10 millon. Right there you are at a TTL of 91 million. And then you add up the other 4 pitchers here and you stick to like 94…then if you keep tejada it’s around 97 and the add the other 20 bats or so at 800k average and you have call it 16 million or a payroll of 113 million. So maybe w a deep run this year the mets allow their payroll to touch 130 and you can fill out w a solid pen and short term roll lead off option. But a major offer on Cespedes or a better fit in Upton, doubt it happens. Mets don’t have the financial flexibility to do that and deal w the arbitration years of duda, Harvey, deGrom, wheeler, Noah etc….eventually they’ll shed cuddyer and granderson and have so young guns in place on the cheap, but I don’t think next year they can add too much. Maybe let Murphy go and that’s how you do it? Seems to be the consensus, especially now since they’re holding onto Flores and have a couple potential options in the minors
