David Wright has been working out in front of the Mets at both Citi Field and Marlins Park for the last week, ramping up his baseball activities to include running, taking groundballs and batting practice during that time as he attempts what is likely his one chance at returning in 2015.
On Tuesday, Terry Collins said Wright will continue to ramp up his work for five consecutive days, including Tuesday’s work in Miami. He will return to Port St. Lucie shortly to continue his rehab, and if he doesn’t suffer any setbacks, he could begin a rehab assignment within a week.
It’s still not clear when Wright might return from the disabled list. He can remain on a rehab assignment for 20 days, at which point he would either have to be activated from the disabled list or shut down again.
Collins said assuming Wright returns, he could be a candidate to bat second in the lineup, although it’s still unknown if he will be able to play everyday.
Wright believes he will be able to play everyday, he told Mike Vorkunov of the Star Ledger on Tuesday in Miami.
“I’m planning on coming back and being an everyday player, Wright said.
Wright has been on the disabled list since April 15. He is on the 60-day disabled list, so the Mets would have to make a move on the 40-man roster if he is activates.
