Lucas Duda put up one of the most monumental weeks in New York Mets history.
Duda clubbed seven home runs in six games from July 28 through August 2, drove in ten, and posted a 2.155 OPS during that span.
Duda also has slugged nine home runs in his last eight games and had three multiple home run games during that span, good for a 1.844 OPS.
For his performance, Duda has earned the National League’s Player of the Week award for July 27-August 2.
It is the first such award for Duda in his big league career. He now has an .837 OPS for the season while hitting .249/.348/.489 with 21 home runs and 50 RBI in 425 plate appearances in 2015.
It’s one of the most remarkable displays of power in baseball in a long time. His manager put him on notice so to speak before this all started, and he certainly responded to the message and re-established himself as a premier offensive presence in the league in a big hurry.
Obviously, he isn’t going to sustain this level of production forever, but finding a happy medium and remaining a consistent threat down the stretch of the season is integral. Hopefully for the Mets sake he can hold onto his stroke and can lead the way as one of the centerpieces of the Mets lineup in their march towards October.
Noah Syndergaard shares the National League Player of the Week along with Duda.
Syndergaard was phenomenal in two starts last week, going 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA in 16 innings with 18 strikeouts and no walks. In his start against the Padres last Tuesday, he retired the first 18 hitters he faced, carrying a perfect game into the seventh inning before Will Venable broke it up.
He went eight innings on Sunday and allowed only a pair of solo home runs with nine strikeouts in his win over the Nationals at Citi Field.
The only other time two Mets shared the NL Player of the Week award was the week ending June 18, 2006 when both David Wright and Jose Reyes won the award.
