Takeaways from the Mets 3-2 win over the Nationals on Saturday…

Duda Flores

The Mets came from behind to defeat the Nationals by the score of 3-2 on Saturday night in front of a sold out crowd at Citi Field. Here are my takeaways from the win…

Dude…

What a run Lucas Duda is on right now. He is absolutely crushing the baseball at the moment. Literally, everything he hits is a home run right now, except for the last hit he had in the eighth which drove in the go-ahead run to deliver the win for the Mets. He’s hitting line drives, which suggests he has shortened his stroke and is not trying to pull the ball. But he’s so strong that even if he takes what he’s given, if he’s on it, the ball is leaving the yard.

He’s picked a hell of a time to heat up after his bat spent the better part of the last two months on vacation. He’s on fire, finally, and the Mets are enjoying the benefits of having their middle of the order threat come back from a summer-long hiatus. It would be nice if Duda could hit some of these home runs with runners on base. But that would require people ahead of him getting on. Hopefully with the reinforcements Sandy Alderson has brought in, that happens more.

Lucas DudaA gutsy effort by Jacob deGrom.

He did not have it for the most part tonight. He couldn’t find his slider, his fastball was finding the center of the plate, and he just could not put the Nationals hitters away.

But, like all aces do, he found a way threw it, and managed to put up zeros following his 31-pitch first inning for the next five innings and keep the club in the game.

A sharply played game, and fine series win.

The Mets played a real nice game behind deGrom, which helped their ace to manage through six innings of real rough waters. They weren’t flashy, but they made the routine plays and didn’t make any mistakes to throw fuel on the fires deGrom found himself in tonight. They deserve credit big time for their quality of play.

The Mets have had so much trouble beating the Nationals in this building of the last four years, but have shown tremendous character in winning the first two games of this series. Now, they can make a statement with a sweep on Sunday night, and heading to Florida tied for first place.

Other notes from Saturday:

Duda now has three multi-home run games in his last eight games played. His five multi-home run games are the most in the game.

Duda now has 20 home runs, and eight home runs in his last seven games.

Jeurys Familia broke out of his funk to save his 28th game of the season, his first since the All-Star break.

Yoenis Cespedes went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout in his Mets debut.

The Mets came from behind to win for the 23rd time in 2015.

This is the first series the Mets have won against the Nationals at Citi Field since a 3 game series April 19-21, 2013.

  1. It’s “through” not “threw”. Geez, you’re paid to write?

    1. Are you paid to nit-pick? Last night and tonight are the types of games the Mets have not won in a long time . Sunday nights game is obviously another one, a share of first place. These games that get them to a milestone have been almost impossible for them to win for many, many years.

  2. How about the Mets bullpen this series?
    7.1 scoreless innings
    1 hit
    2 BB
    10 K

That’s some unsung hero work there

    1. Plus solid defense…. Pitching, defense, and home runs….. Wow, what a concept!

Let me know if you need an editor. That’s an unacceptable error for a “professional” “writer”. Mistakes are for weathermen. Clean it up.

    1. It’s a Mets blog, not a senior thesis. That’s all you can comment on after the two biggest wins the Mets have had in almost a decade? Maybe you’re not a Met fan….
