There is no deal to acquire Carlos Gomez, said Sandy Alderson

Gomez Wheeler Flores

BaronA bizarre night ended with even more craziness, as Sandy Alderson said after the club’s 7-3 loss to the Padres on Wednesday there was no trade sending Carlos Gomez to the Mets in exchange for Zack Wheeler and Wilmer Flores.

Alderson said there is no deal and there will be no deal after the club’s 7-3 loss to the Padres on Wednesday night.

“There is no trade. And unfortunately, social media, etc. got ahead of the facts and may have had an adverse effect for one of the players involved,” Alderson said on Wednesday night. It was an unfortunate situation, and something Ive addressed personally with the player involved. Its one of things that happen today with modern communications, etc.

“Whatever has been speculated over the course of the evening has not and will not transpire,” Alderson said.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Brewers had concerns over Wheeler’s medicals, and nixed the deal.

In another twist, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says the Mets backed out of the deal over concerns with Gomez’s hip, although his agent, Scott Boras, said Gomez is healthy and not seeking treatment for his hip.

Nightengale says Milwaukee still plans to trade Gomez by Friday’s non-waiver trade deadline.

Remember, Wheeler is recovering from Tommy John Surgery and also a procedure to repair a torn tendon in his elbow. It’s still early in the process, and he just started throwing on Monday in Port St. Lucie.

But it’s also safe to assume Wheeler did not start throwing without an examination from team doctors in New York. Presumably, that exam would include an MRI on his elbow, and if it was dirty he would not have been cleared to throw.

So, it stands to reason that it was an issue with Gomez or another player, and not Wheeler.

Alderson would not elaborate on the details of this trade, other than continuing to say it would not happen.

Asked if the club was still searching for a bat, Alderson said, “it’s still not Friday, yet.”

Meanwhile, manager Terry Collins had no knowledge of the trade, saying after the game he was not informed a deal was in place.

“There was nothing I knew about,” Collins said angrily. “Why would I take him out of the game?”

Flores – who was seen crying on the field in-game, said he was saddened by the prospects of leaving the organization.

“I was sad, being with the Mets forever and having all my teammates here,” Flores said. “That’s why I got emotional out there.”

Flores said he learned he was traded from both fans in the stands and his teammates.

Whatever the case ultimately was, it was not right what Flores had to go through. Whether the trade went down or not, it was obvious he got word of the situation and was not equipped to stay in that game. It didn’t hurt the team in the end, but Flores himself said it was a very difficult time for him and his head and heart were not in the moment.

It’s understandable. Collins’ stance is also understandable.

Still, Flores should have come out of the game, and information should have been sent to the dugout, especially after it was clear Flores had been negatively impacted by the situation.

The kid has been to hell and back for this team in 2015 especially, been asked to do things facing certain failure. He was owed more than what he got last night, whether he’s a Met or not now.

  1. So one of two things happened. Either the mets incomplete doctors continued to be such and the brewers doctors spotted something wrong right away/aren’t mets fans and don’t believe all of upper managements lies OR the brewers got a better offer after the trade came out and used the TJ on wheeler as an excuse, in which case, they’re the typical scumbag organization.

  2. Watching Collins handle this situation makes me think it’s time for him to go. He threw Flores under the bus without even the slightest hesitation. Why do that? Why not take him out of the game quietly. Why even play him in the first place with all the talk he’s being traded. He could have said something like Flores is a young guy, valuable member of this team, and we’ll move forward from here. Maybe Collins should have focused on Colon and got him out the game soon enough for the team to have a shot at winning. That would’ve been way more important to the Mets than the impact of Flores crying and not being ready to hit. I’m ready for Wally.

    1. How did he throw him under the bus? He had no knowledge of a trade. And there was no talk of Wilmer specifically when the game started

  3. Alderson, Wilpons, you are vile bastards and worthy of our disgust and ridicule. Why don’t you go fly somewhere on a really badly-maintained airplane?

  4. wouldn’t it be something if this moment actually galvanizes the Mets fan base behind Flores and he goes on a roll for the rest of the year. He would become one of the most beloved Mets in recent memory.

  5. So the media gets ahead of themselves and we blame the mets? I’m not a Wilson or Sandy fan but come on. Mets doctors obviously saw something on gomez’s medical history that turned them away. Good. He is obviously hurting seeing the slumping numbers. Although he has been better as of late. And he has the same elbow issue as Lagares.

    1. “The Mets doctors obviously saw something”? You mean the same dr’s who allowed Matz to pitch with chest pains, the same dr’s who have allowed Lagaresvto play all year even though he needs elbow surgery, the same dr’s who keep telling Collins there is nothing wrong with Parnell. Give me a break, this was all about the fact that the Mets didn’t want to pay Gomez 13 mil over the next two years, andcto think otherwise is stupid.

  6. While that was most certainly one of the weirdest nights in MLB that I’ve ever experienced, I find myself torn straight down the middle. After jumping around the house telling my wife that Gomez is absolutely an impact player and me must’ve moved Juan in the deal, word came in about Wheels and Flo. I was stunned. Every pundit and writer seemed to think that woukd have been a great trade for the Mets and I’m inclined to believe them but I thought we gave up too much. Clouded by loyalty. Judgement skewed by my desperation to see our kids succeed. So now I sit here half disappointed we don’t have the impact player. Half relieved Flo remains a Met. Mind you this was before the tears at SS. His emotion only further endeared him to me and I hope he gets on a roll but….like I said, I’m torn. Like Flo, the fans are humans too and seeing him cry was heart breaking. I’m happy hea still with his team. He’s still one of our kids. At least he is at 10:33 AM EST
