Late Monday, the Mets learned Jenrry Mejia failed a second drug test which would suspend him for the next 162 games in accordance with the rules of the Joint Drug Agreement.
But according to TJ Quinn of ESPN, Mejia actually took the drug test which led to this suspension while he was serving his original 80 game suspension earlier this season.
Mejia was activated from the restricted list on July 8, and was active for 21 days before the league announced Mejia had failed a second drug test. While Mejia is accruing service time while on the restricted list, the Mets are only responsible for 20 days pay for Mejia.
He was earning $2.6 million in 2015 – the Mets will ultimately owe Mejia about $300,000 for the year.
