LHP Jack Leathersich was required to throw 57 pitches in an outing on June 29 while with Triple-A Las Vegas.

As it turns out, that will be his last outing for at least a year, if not longer.

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York says the left-hander underwent Tommy John Surgery on Thursday.

He will be sidelined for the next 12-14 months, and could conceivably be out until 2017.

The 57 pitches Leathersich threw were well above his previous season high of 31 on April 18 against Fresno. He did throw 30 pitches in an outing against the Cardinals in his time in the big leagues.

Leathersich had a 2.31 ERA in 17 relief appearances for the Mets this season, although he struggled as a lefty specialist as left-handed hitters hit .280 against him.

Leathersich is on the 40-man roster, but because he incurred the injury as a minor leaguer, he is not on the major league disabled list. If the Mets choose to clear the 40-man roster spot and retain his rights, they’d have to recall him, and place him on the 60-day disabled list. At that point, he would be accruing major league service time.
