The Mets announced they’ve acquired RHP Tyler Clippard and cash in exchange for minor league pitching prospect Casey Meisner.
This is after they sent two pitching prospects to the Braves in exchange for Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson on Friday.
And apparently, the Mets may not be done shopping ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
The Mets are optimistic they could acquire one more player, reports David Lennon of Newsday.
That one player could be a bat, as Clippard was not expected to impact their ability to acquire an outfielder, tweets Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
But the Mets may have dealt a very valuable trade chip, as Marc Carig of Newsday says Meisner was one of the prospects included in a proposed deal with the Brewers to bring OF Gerardo Parra to the club.
The Mets have been connected to Parra, along with other outfielders such as Carlos Gomez, Justin Upton, Ben Zobrist, Jay Bruce, and Will Venable.
They’ve also been connected to Troy Tulowitzki, although the club reportedly believes the Rockies aren’t yet motivated to move their star shortstop.
The Mets have been floating Zack Wheeler’s name in trade talks for controllable pieces back. They floated Wheeler’s name to the Reds in talks for Bruce, according to Andy Martino of the Daily News, but Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says those talks went nowhere.
It’s not clear whether they’d ultimately deal him, but Sandy Alderson said he is not interested in dealing the four young starting pitchers currently in the rotation – Wheeler is not among those pitchers right now. Perhaps they’d re-consider moving Wheeler for Tulowitzki, if the Rockies finally budge and move him?
The Mets have also been floating Brandon Nimmo’s name in trade talks, and Andy Martino of the Daily News says the Mets are also willing to move other top prospects such as Michael Fulmer and Gavin Cecchini.
In any event, Sandy Alderson said over the weekend he is looking to make, “big moves” ahead of the trade deadline.
