The Mets finally placed OF Michael Cuddyer on the disabled list with a bone bruise in his left knee on Friday.

He said he originally injured his knee during the series against the Cubs in early July, but can’t pinpoint a specific incident which caused the bruise.

The injury only bothers him when he’s running and not while he’s hitting. But the inability to run without discomfort limits his ability to be an effective member of the roster.

Cuddyer said that for now, he will just be shutting all activity down in an attempt to let his knee heal and the inflammation to go down.

Once he begins to exercise again, the focus will be on his quad muscles to strengthen the area around the injury.

He is hopeful he can begin baseball activities within 15 days, but admitted he was uncertain how long it would take for the bone bruise to heal and for the process to get him back on the field.

Once he is cleared to begin strengthening and baseball activities, he said he will do so at the team’s minor league complex in Port St. Lucie.

Cuddyer does not believe this injury will require surgery, and there is no other structural damage indicated in his knee right now. He is confident he will return before the end of the season, he said.
