There may be a lot of chatter about Ben Zobrist lately, but the Mets have shown interest in one of his teammates, as Andy Martino of the Daily News reports that New York has also asked about A’s outfielder Josh Reddick.
Reddick is hitting .283/.339/.455 with 13 doubles, three triples, 12 home runs, 56 RBI and 42 runs scored in a productive season for Oakland so far this year. It has recently been reported, however, that Reddick and his general manager Billy Beane have been at odds, which could potentially make him available.
In their talks with the A’s, however, the Mets came away “dubious” that Beane would trade Reddick, Martino said. The team may still be keeping an eye on Reddick in the next week before the trade deadline.
I wrote about if Reddick was a fit with the Mets earlier this month, and while his offense certainly wouldn’t be a negative for this team as they’ve struggled so mightily lately, he does have his shortcomings.
While Reddick is having a very productive season at the plate, it’s largely been in a platoon role. In 88 games this season, Reddick has 264 plate appearances against right-handers, where he’s hitting .320/.369/.527 with 13 doubles, 11 home runs and 46 RBI with a .896 OPS. On the other side, Reddick has just 84 plate appearances against left-handed pitching, where he’s hitting a lowly .169/.238/.234 with no doubles, one home run, nine RBI and a .472 OPS.
Reddick may not be the perfect fit for this team, but he’s certainly an upgrade to what they currently have. At this point, the Mets could use any offense they can get their hands on–so this bares watching.
Reddick is making $4.1M this season and is arbitration eligible next season.
