Takeaways from the Mets 3-0 loss to the Dodgers on Thursday…

Clayton Kershaw

The Mets lost the opening game of their four-game series with the Dodgers 3-0 on Thursday night at Citi Field. Here are my takeaways from the loss…

Rich MacLeodNo chance.

The Mets never had a shot tonight.

This lineup is a joke, as John Mayberry Jr. and Eric Campbell, both sub-200 hitters in the month of July, were the 4-5 hitters tonight. Anthony Recker, also hitting under .200 and just back from the minor leagues, was also in the starting lineup.

Clayton Kershaw, once again proving that he’s the preeminent pitcher of our generation, absolutely dominated this weak Mets lineup tonight and had a perfect game going into the 7th inning.

Quite honestly, I thought he was going to do it.

The Mets took weak hacks and flailed at the plate against the 27-year-old left-hander all night long, not even threatening a hit until Curtis Granderson’s leadoff single in the bottom of the 7th. At that point they actually had a rally going, as they had 1st and 2nd with one out. Unfortunately for the Mets their four and five hitters, Mayberry and Campbell, came up to the plate and were, unsurprisingly, unable to get it done.

Once again in the 8th, the Mets actually might’ve had a shot against Kershaw and the Dodgers as Lucas Duda led off the frame with a single to center. Representing the tying run on first with nobody out, Duda was inexplicably picked off by Kershaw, the following two hitters were retired with ease and that was all she wrote on the Mets chances on Thursday night.

Prior to tonight’s game, general manager Sandy Alderson told reporters that he wouldn’t be bothered if the Mets stood pat by the trade deadline. You wonder if he feels the same way as he watched the Mets once again score one run or less for the 23rd time in a game this season.

Other notes from Thursday:

Bartolo Colon pitched well, allowing five hits, one earned run and no walks with four strikeouts in 8 IP.

John Mayberry Jr. and Eric Campbell went a combined 0-for-6 with three strikeouts and left four men on base.

Ruben Tejada went 0-for-4 at the plate, ending his 10-game hitting streak.

Sean Gilmartin allowed two runs in the 9th inning without recording an out.

The Mets were shutout for the 11th time this season.

One response to “Takeaways from the Mets 3-0 loss to the Dodgers on Thursday…”

  1. Bart pitched really well and came up big in a tough draw against Kershaw. The lineup tonight was pathetic and because the mets never learned to hit and run, bunt, take an extra base, etc now trying to do those fundies exposes how unsound they are. This organization is reaching new lows on a daily basis. Alderson has spent $90MM on four FA position players in the last two years and he’s been an absolute disaster with that money
