The Mets lost the rubber game of a three-game series with Nationals after losing to them 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon in Washington. Here are my takeaways from the loss…

A devastating loss.
There are few words. The Mets blew a 3-0 lead on Wednesday afternoon to the Nationals in a pivotal rubber game of this series.
It looked as if the game was in the bag, as the Mets had a 3-1 lead with two outs in the 8th, but after Bobby Parnell threw a wild pitch to advance the tying runs into scoring position, he immediately gave up a game-tying, RBI single to Michael Taylor, a stolen base and the eventual game-winning RBI double by Danny Espinosa.
The Mets were only able to muster up three runs today, all with two outs in the 4th on a two-run double by Kirk Nieuwenhuis and an RBI single by Kevin Plawecki. After that, the offense did little to nothing–the final 13 Mets batters of the game were retired.
This game is really a crusher, as the Mets were four outs away from making a statement with a huge series win and just one out away from shutout closer Jeurys Familia entering the ballgame for the 9th inning. In the blink of an eye, the Mets went from potentially being one gave behind Washington to three back–a big difference.
This one hurts, more than any other this season. A blown opportunity.
Noah Syndergaard gutted.
Noah Syndergaard fought himself on the mound all afternoon, but he was able to grind through five innings, in which he allowed 10 total baserunners, and allow just one run.
The five walks in his outing were a career high, and he struggled as badly as I’ve ever seen him on a major league mound, but what impressed me was his ability to grind through his struggles and get out of jam-after-jam.
He was good enough to win and for awhile it looked as if he was going to.
Other notes from Wednesday:
With the blown save in the 8th, the Mets lost just their 4th game all season when leading after 7 innings.
Ruben Tejada extended his hitting streak to 10 games, going 1-for-3 at the plate.
Michael Taylor drove in three of the Nationals four runs, all with two outs.
Lucas Duda went 0-for-4 with a strikeout and left five runners on base.
With the loss, the Mets are now 4-6 against Washington this season.
One response to “Takeaways from the Mets 4-3 loss against the Nationals…”
Yes this one hurts and Dodgers aces in next two games maybe even more so.
Washington has a habit of constantly coming at you, so no matter how much down they can rally. However, for me, a key point (not the only one) was as I commented several days ago is the inability of Mets pitchers it seems to put away batter when they are ahead with 2 strikes. Parnell hadTaylor 1-2 and let him get away.
Giving up him to den decker, given ex-met, also hurts.
