Report: Jack Leathersich may require elbow surgery

BaronAfter his first appearance at Triple-A Las Vegas in which he threw 57 pitches on June 29, Jack Leatherisch may have significant damage in his elbow.

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York says the left-hander may require elbow surgery, with Tommy John Surgery being considered as one of the options to repair the damage in his left elbow.

Leathersich has not pitched since that outing on June 29.

The 57 pitches Leathersich threw were well above his previous season high of 31 on April 18 against Fresno. He did throw 30 pitches in an outing against the Cardinals in his time in the big leagues.

It would be a real shame if that were the cases. Leatherisch has always shown a lot of promise in the minor leagues with his high strikeout totals, and he was actually quite effective for the Mets as a general relief pitcher this season. Hopefully he comes back strong and can continue to develop and eventually become a useful piece int he future.

If Leathersich needs this surgery, he’s going to be out until at least September, 2016.

Leathersich had a 2.31 ERA in 17 relief appearances for the Mets this season, although he struggled as a lefty specialist as left-handed hitters hit .280 against him.

  1. Seems weird that nobody is giving at least a little credit to the guy who actually broke this story first.

  2. That was a really great article by Stephen. Makes my blood boil that they let that happen…I agree they really should fire Backman over that. He potentially just ruined a guys career.
