The Mets lost both Josh Edgin and Zack Wheeler to Tommy John Surgery in mid-March, unquestionably sidelining them into next season.
But this week, both pitchers are expected to reach their first milestone in their recovery, as Kristie Ackert of the Daily News is reporting they will begin a throwing program at the team’s minor league complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Wheeler’s procedure was a little more complicated than Edgin’s as Wheeler required both his ulnar collateral ligament and a tendon to be repaired in his right elbow. As such, he is expected to be sidelined until next June or July.
No timetable has been offered for Edgin to return yet, although he should be on a modestly faster track than Wheeler. If he stays on the 12-14 month path to recovery, he should be able to return by Opening Day in 2016 or the first part of May.
