Michael Cuddyer’s knee remains problematic, could go to the DL

The Mets may be running out of options for treating the bone bruise in Michael Cuddyer’s left knee.

Cuddyer was double-switched out of the game in the eighth inning after his knee flared up, leaving the veteran with limited options to manage the pain during these games.

Terry Collins said after the game on Sunday the club will attempt one more method to help Cuddyer deal with the pain as a, “last resort,” otherwise it’s likely he will head to the disabled list.

For now, the Mets will not be calling upon an outfielder from Triple-A Las Vegas in the event the club places Cuddyer on the disabled list. It’s logical to conclude Cuddyer will be unavailable on Monday, meaning the Mets will be playing a man short as they open a critical series against the Nationals.

It just doesn’t seem like this is going to end well for Cuddyer and the Mets this season. He has said this will not heal during the season – only an extended period of rest will cure the problem in his knee.

So, the Mets have to make a decision, and quick, if they decide to place Cuddyer on the disabled list.

The Mets have very limited choices on the 40-man roster at the moment. They can recall Darrell Ceciliani, but he’s on the disabled list right now. He’s also shown to only a part-time player although he is a quality defensive outfielder.

They could consider calling up Travis Taijeron who has had a fantastic year in Las Vegas as well.

Or, the Mets can accelerate their plans to add big league help from outside the organization, which they need to do anyway.

But if Cuddyer is going to be unavailable, they’re going to have to acquire one or more options for the bench on top of a primary outfielder.

The Mets could make the aggressive play and bring up Michael Conforto or Brandon Nimmo. But while there’s been some talk internally about such a move, it doesn’t seem like either will be brought up given the current state of things. At least, not yet.

Besides, there’s no guarantee these guys can come here and produce the way the Mets need either of them to, and there’s no reason to risk their long-term development if they can acquire established players from the outside.

  1. Cuddly finally will be on DL- then
Sandy will bring up Conforto, instead of making a trade, and sell it to us as an upgrade… Smh!

  2. the cuddyer signing has been disastrous. I am so tired of this man running too hard to first base on routine groundouts. He just looks like a little leaguer hustling although inevitably he gets thrown out every time. Plus, he’s increasing his injury odds by not properly pacing himself on those groundouts.

    1. He knows New Yorkers & if he lolly gags routine grounders every time , the Boo Birds would have been out a long time ago- the Mets missed 2 opportunities to put him on the DL :
Once before the ASG & again right after the AS break when he was still hurting/ a ridiculous front office, they have No Clue.

  3. Hey Michael,

All great conversations to have given our Mets of yesterdays past. I would not sell the farm to get a bat. Take a shot on Conforto, d’ Arnud comes back in two weeks. You can squeeze by here and not sacrifice the season or the future. I am ecxcited about the movement of the organization.. If you are going to make a trade don’t overpay impacting next year. Prospects and Neise potentiall for….? Upton? No luck with David.s friends to date and a rental. Need a slugging 1B/OF because Duda is not coming out of it just yet. Placeholder for Smith unless he is dealt. How about a Ramirez and see if he can play first? For Niese, and lower level dudes I am sure he is an overpay. I would not give away youth. I feel like a three team trade is in the offing. .
