David Wright’s status remains unchanged, says Sandy Alderson

On Sunday, Terry Collins said David Wright was on the, “upswing” in his rehabilitation from symptoms related to spinal stenosis with hopes he would be able to start some baseball activities following his regularly scheduled meeting with Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles on Monday.

But apparently, not much was derived from that meeting, as according to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Sandy Alderson said Wright’s status has not changed following the meeting.

As such, Wright and the Mets are still waiting, and he will continue to rehab in Los Angeles until doctors clear him to return to Port St. Lucie and start baseball activities.

After talking to and listening to Wright last week in Los Angeles, Collins’ statement seemed a tad premature on Sunday. He probably shouldn’t have said anything because it creates an expectation, whether it’s a shot in the dark or not.

No matter what, as great as it would be to see Wright get back, they just can’t expect that to happen at this point, and therefore cannot depend on his bat serving to bolster the lineup, whether or not they acquire someone before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

And while Wright expects to play again in 2015, there’s going to come a point when the focus will shift away from a return and more towards being ready for spring training in seven months. If this drags on into August or September, time is just going to run out for him to return, even if the club makes it to the playoffs.
