Mets sign Joe Benson to minors deal

BaronThe Mets have added to their outfield depth at Double-A Binghamton, signing Joe Benson to a minor league contract and assigning him to the Binghamton Mets.

Benson, 27, has played in 21 big league games in his professional career. That came in 2011 while with the Twins – he posted a .239/.270/.352 line in 74 plate appearances with Minnesota that season.

He was recently cut loose by the Braves after playing in 41 games with Triple-A Gwinnett and hitting .246/.346/.331 with nine RBI in 137 plate appearances. He then joined the Sugarland Skeeters, an independent team in the Atlantic League. He appeared in just five games before joining the Mets.

He has hit .253 with a .762 OPS and 85 home runs in 10 seasons in the minor leagues.
