Kirk Nieuwenhuis joining the Mets, option Darrell Ceciliani to Las Vegas

BaronThe Mets are bringing Kirk Nieuwenhuis back, again.

Nieuwnhuis has been promoted and will have his contract purchased in time for Monday’s game against the Giants.

Nieuwenhuis went just 3-for-38 with 17 strikeouts in 40 plate appearances this season, and was 0-for-13 with eight strikeouts as a pinch hitter before being designated for assignment by the club on May 19. The team then traded him to the Angels before making a waiver claim and outrighting him to Las Vegas on June 15.

Nieuwenhuis posted a 1.095 OPS in 15 games with Las Vegas.

To make room on the active roster, the Mets optioned Darrell Ceciliani to Triple-A Las Vegas. He has struggled and not produced off the bench as of late – he is just 2-for-his-last-27 with 13 strikeouts in his last 16 games.

Even so, it’s just another musical chairs move for the back end of the roster, which probably won’t change much for the Mets bench, which is terrible.

The 40-man roster is now full. It’s noteworthy because they have to add Jenrry Mejia tomorrow, which means someone will now have to be taken off the 40-man roster – not to mention the active roster – to accommodate Mejia

The Mets could always transfer David Wright, Rafael Montero, or Buddy Carlyle to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Mejia on the 40-man roster but it remains to be seen if that’s the consideration.

To see who Mejia might replace tomorrow, read this post from Saturday.

    1. I like Kirk, he’s a good guy, but this must be very hard on his self-confidence. And it is reminiscent of the old Einsteinium adage “Doing the same thing over and over again is the definition of insanity.” Or sheer desperation. Sorry, Kirk, no offense intended.
