The Mets are not considering firing Terry Collins

Over their last 64 games, the Mets have gone 27-37, having posted a .228/.258/.358 line at the plate during that span.

In addition, the Mets have lost ten of their last 14 games while scoring 1.64 runs per game and posting a .516 OPS during that stretch.

But on Friday night at Dodger Stadium, Sandy Alderson put to bed any notion the club was pointing the finger at Terry Collins, and considering his dismissal as manager of the club.

Alderson said there was, “absolutely no consideration” to fire Collins for the Mets problems. Rather, the club’s issues are due to both injuries and underperformance of players on the roster.

Terry Collins“This is not a Terry Collins watch,” Alderson said on Friday.

Alderson said it would be, “grossly unfair” to fire Collins under the circumstances and for the club’s performance over the last few weeks.

“We’re a .500 team. We haven’t been moving in the right direction,” Alderson said. “I understand that. We’ve had a lot of people hurt for long periods of time. We’ve got some young guys in particular that are not hitting. We’ve got some older players that have had to try to carry the load. I think to put all of this on Terry would be grossly unfair. So from that standpoint, there’s absolutely no consideration of that.”

Alderson is weighing all possible options to try and find improvements for the club.

He said he spoke with one team two weeks ago who originally was a seller, but now considers themselves buyers at the halfway point in the season.

That one club could be the A’s, who Joel Sherman of the New York Post said earlier on Friday GM Billy Beane is saying Ben Zobrist is not available thanks to a recent 12-6 run.

Still, Alderson said the Mets are considering any and all shakeups to try and boost his fading club.

“I wouldn’t say anything is off the table,” Alderson explained.

Collins is becoming a sympathetic figure. This is a terrible mistake. He hasn’t made any adjustments to compensate for the team’s weaknesses and they play awful fundamental baseball. Can’t bunt, can’t hit & run, no situational hitting, terrible base-running. On a team that has lost 1-0 four times and is in countless low scoring games it’s essential to execute. This is on Collins. Backman would change that immediately. As for the roster, Alderson will go next, but the manager is the first fall guy
