Mets hope David Wright can begin limited baseball activities next week

BaronDavid Wright has spent much of the last six weeks in Los Angeles with Dr. Robert Watkins in an attempt to build core strength to alleviate the symptoms being caused by spinal stenosis.

And now, he could be heading back to Port St. Lucie.

Terry Collins told Mike Puma of the New York Post the club is hopeful Wright can resume limited baseball activities next week.

Such activities, according to Puma, include running and fielding.

Wright and the club will meet this weekend in Los Angeles when the Mets play the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium, at which point they will have clarity on what’s next for the injured third baseman.

If Wright is on-track and can begin to gear up towards a return, that could pace him to return later in July, although it’s possible – but not certain – Wright would need a full month from the day he begins working at the team’s minor league complex in Port St. Lucie.

Obviously, this is encouraging news, but the team will of course proceed with caution, treat this delicately and not activate him unless they’re certain he’s ready, ready to produce, and can provide some level of certainty he can remain on the field. That’s assuming he can proceed towards resuming baseball activities too and does not suffer a setback, which has not been guaranteed here.

Even if he does return this month, expectations must be realistic for what he can provide the club, especially at the beginning. Collins would presumably afford Wright rest every few days, and perhaps he could serve as the team’s designated hitter in Baltimore and St. Petersburg, assuming he’s back by then.

But first, let’s get to that point his regimen must be managed. And today is an encouraging step in that direction.

Wright has been on the disabled list since April 15.
