Mets activate Daniel Murphy from the disabled list, option Dilson Herrera to Triple-A

BaronAfter nearly a month’s absence, Daniel Murphy has been activated from the 15-day disabled list.

Murphy suffered a strained quad muscle on June 4 against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field. He went 7-for-15 with two doubles in four games during his rehab assignment with Single-A St. Lucie, playing third base in each of the four games.

To make room for Murphy on the active roster, the Mets optioned Dilson Herrera to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Herrera has struggled with the Mets in 25 games this season, hitting /195/.290/.317 with two home runs and four RBI with nine walks and 22 strikeouts in 93 plate appearances. He’s just 8-for-48 since returning from the disabled list on June 11.

With Wilmer Flores moving to second, Herrera is just the odd man out in the equation right now. He needs to play everyday as he really needs some more seasoning, so a demotion makes the most sense for him at the moment.

He will probably be fine – he’s shown glimpses of what the Mets are so excited about with his talent. He just needs to iron out some of the kinks, enjoy some success again, and polish his skill set for everyday play at the big league level.

Mets should send down Campbell. He can’t hit or field. Mets have to field best D at all times and Herrera should be util guy not Campbell
