Takeaways from the Mets 2-1 13 inning win over the Reds on Sunday…

Mets celebrate

The Mets defeated the Reds by the score of 2-1 in 14 innings yesterday/today. Here are the takeaways…

BaronThe bats remain stuck in a thick ice brick.

Whatever it takes. Today, it took a bases loaded error by Joey Votto, his second of the day, for the Mets to squeak by in this one…

But just when I think the offense can’t get any worse, today (and yesterday) happens.

The Mets just don’t hit anything hard, they don’t work counts well, and they are as static as they come when they actually do get base runners on. Of course the Mets had seven base runners after the seventh inning and it’s next to impossible to score when that’s the case unless there is some power, which they have none of either.

They hit a couple of balls hard in the seventh, but Skip Schumaker saved the Reds with a diving stop to rob Michael Cuddyer and then a throw to nail Lucas Duda at second on an attempt at a double (after he stumbled on the wet dirt). That’s how it’s going for the Mets at the moment, however.

They went 0-for-15 with runners in scoring position, and somehow won…

Great bullpen work.

Hat tip to Hansel Robles, Jeurys Familia and Logan Verrett for some handy bullpen work in this one. Robles cleaned up a mess started by Carlos Torres and Alex Torres in the seventh, and both Verrett and a Familia gave the Mets a multiple-inning effort of scoreless relief.

How the Mets plan on piecing game two together is anyone’s guess, but hopefully Steven Matz can give the Mets some quality length later today.
