FanGraphs: Mets projected to sign Gregory Guerrero, Andres Gimenez next month

BaronThe 2015-2016 international free agent signing period begins on July 2, and the Mets could be making some immediate investments in some young talent.

According to Kiley McDaniel of FanGraphs, the Mets are projected to sign 16-year-old infielders Gregory Guerrero and Andres Gimenez.

Due to their age, both players are ineligible to sign until the 2015-2016 signing periods.

According to McDaniel, Guerrero is a shortstop who profiles as a power bat with speed. Eventually, McDaniel says he could end up at third base.

“Guerrero has some of the same actions and swing mechanics as last year’s top player, Brewers SS Gilbert Lara, and, like Lara, also projects to move to third base eventually, but will play shortstop for the time being,” McDaniel writes.

As for Giminez, McDaniel says he is one of the top players in this year’s international free agent class, but while he has a lot of speed he doesn’t hit for a lot of power in the early part of his development.

“Gimenez has all the indicators at a young age that he’ll be the next savvy and toolsy Venezuelan shortstop to become a top prospect,” McDaniel said.

Guerrero is projected to sign for $1.8 million, Gimenez $1.25 million. The Mets have a total of $2.5 million to spend in next year’s signing period, according to Baseball America, meaning the Mets would exceed their bonus pool immediately with these two signings if these two players sign for their projected bonuses.
