If Dillon Gee was attempting to reboot his season and career on Thursday night with Triple-A Las Vegas, he may have hit a blue screen.
Gee made his debut for the 51s on Thursday night after accepting his outright assignment against Salt Lake City and allowed six runs on seven hits with a walk and six strikeouts in only five innings, throwing 56 of his 83 pitches for strikes.
He was bailed out by the Las Vegas offense, who pounded out 20 runs to defeat the Bees 20-8 in Salt Lake City.
Upon designating Gee for assignment last Monday, Sandy Alderson said he was hoping Gee could work his way back to the big leagues and contribute to the Mets at some point again.
But now that the Mets have promoted Steven Matz, it’s hard to see where Gee might fit going forward, even if Gee begins to pitch well in the minor leagues. Presumably, Niese will be some kind of swing-man/spot starter/sixth starter, and the Mets don’t need another long man for the bullpen.
If anything, they need a hard throwing right-handed pitcher.
In the end, Gee may be reduced to being a $5.3 million minor leaguer for the remainder of the year, or at least until rosters expand in September (if there’s a 40-man spot for him at that time).
For now, he needs to get himself on-track, and at least give the Mets a difficult problem.
