The Mets continue to wait and hope David Wright returns at some point this year.
Sandy Alderson said on Friday Wright has made some progress as he endeavors to return from the disabled list. However, Wright’s progress has yet to transition into any baseball activities.
Wright is still in Los Angeles working with Dr. Robert Watkins and his team of physical therapists as he attempts to strengthen his core and back in an attempt to better manage his spinal stenosis.
Alderson said Wright continues to meet with Watkins every Monday, and while he seemed hopeful, he is not sure at what point Wright might be cleared to return to the team’s minor league complex in Port St. Lucie and make another attempt to begin baseball activities.
Right now, the Mets probably have to assume Wright is out for the year and proceed accordingly by acquiring a third baseman. If he comes back, great, but to even hope for this, and to expect he is going to come back and resemble the player they need him to be could be very far fetched after all of this time.
At the moment, the Mets are hoping Wright returns by the end of July, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
Wright has been on the disabled list since April 15 after straining his hamstring.
