The Mets are currently carrying three left-handed relievers on the roster at the moment: Jack Leathersich, Alex Torres, and Sean Gilmartin.
All three have had tremendous success getting right-handed hitters out. Gilmartin has held right-handers to a .159 average, Torres .146, with Leathersich having modest success with a .263 average against right-handers.
However, none of the three southpaws in the Mets bullpen have been particularly effective against left-handed hitters, which is their primary task on the roster.
Lefties are 7-for-25 against Leathersich, 9-for-39 against Gilmartin, and 12-for-43 against Torres, combining to hit .262 against the Mets left-handed relief unit.
In other words, the Mets have really missed Jerry Blevins this season.
It’s somewhat of a surprise Gilmartin hasn’t been particularly good against left-handed hitting so far, considering he has shown an ability to handle the left side consistently in his minor league career. Then again, that was in the minor leagues, and this is a whole new ballgame, no pun intended.
It’s not terribly surprising the other two have struggled considering they have always had reverse splits in their pro careers.
But among the three, the Mets were really hoping Torres could fill the void left by Blevins as a lefty specialist.
It just hasn’t happened.
One response to “The Mets don’t have a true lefty specialist in the bullpen right now…”
