As another game passes with second and third string players on the field, physical and mental mistakes are becoming a more common occurrence for the Mets, which is costing the team more and more runs and more and more games.
After another loss marred by such mistakes, Terry Collins attributed these problems to growing pains for some of his younger players.
“When you’re calling up guys from Triple-A all the time, or you’ve got young players out there, that’s asking an awful lot of people who perhaps aren’t ready to do all the things you’re asking,” Terry Collins explained. “You’ve got to certainly understand that it’s part of the growing process. There’s a lot of action. The game is fast. The action is fast here.”
The problem is, that doesn’t explain away the mistakes from the veterans.
In addition, these plays which aren’t being made, such as people being unable to bunt, pitchers not covering first base, middle infielders leaving second base unoccupied on steal attempts, base running mistakes, and so on and so forth are inexcusable at the high school level. Yet, they’re taking place with a major league team.
Collins has grown more and more visibly frustrated at the mistakes, and admitted on Saturday night he is perturbed by his team’s embarrassing play.
“Yeah, it gets a little frustrating. I’m like everybody else,” he said.
Whatever the case is or regardless of how the club tries to explain away or even excuse this, the people in charge need to decide if this is a team that wants to win in 2015, or if this is going to be yet another year of evaluation and audition come August.
If it’s the former, which they’ve claimed it is dating back to February, it’s time to get better players, shore up the defense, and support this dynamite pitching staff the way it needs to be supported to win 90 games and make a run in October.
One response to “Terry Collins believe some of his players aren’t ready for MLB game speed”
Some very good points here. Unfortunately, the veteran outfield is a big problem, with two guys who can’t throw very well and a left fielder who has limited range. As for the infield, the left side is a disaster, with two guys playing out of position right now.
Also, the only above average starters are deGrom (ERA+ of 160!) and Harvey (113). Matz needs to be called up. Check out the ERA+ for the others: Syndergaard (93), Niese (89), and Colon (78).
