Note: Logan Verrett’s number will be 35, last worn by Dillon Gee…

On Wednesday night, the Mets announced they purchased RHP Logan Verrett’s contract from Triple-A Las Vegas.

The Mets announced on Thursday afternoon Verrett will take jersey number 35, last worn by Dillon Gee who was designated for assignment by the club on Monday.

It’s a little quick to hand out Gee’s number to a new kid on the block. There’s no question about it. Gee had been with the team since 2010, pitched reasonably well for a mid-rotation starter in some pretty lean times, and got jerked around by the team over the last six months in particular.

This could mean Gee has thrown his final pitch in a Met uniform. After all, Sandy Alderson did say on Monday they will attempt to trade him, as they did during the off-season. So, the club is making no bones about what they’d like to do primarily.

But business is business, and if Gee had pitched better, perhaps this wouldn’t be a discussion point today. Perhaps if Gee is retained in the organization and is brought back to the big club, Verrett will give him his number back.

Of course, perhaps if the team had handled Gee’s situation better, this wouldn’t be a discussion today, either…
