BaronNelson Doubleday, co-owner of the Mets along with current CEO Fred Wilpon from 1980 until 2002, has passed away.

Doubleday, along with current Mets CEO Fred Wilpon, bought the Mets in 1980. He put up 80 percent of the $21 million price tag to buy the Mets from the family of Joan Payson, the original owner of the New York Mets, and was majority owner of the club. Doubleday was a descendent of Abner Doubleday, who is credited with inventing the game of baseball.

“We were saddened to hear the news of the passing of Nelson Doubleday, Jr.,” The Mets said in a statement.  “Nelson had a love of baseball and the Mets. On behalf of everyone at the organization, we send our condolences and sympathies to his family.”
