There’s one thing Jeurys Familia, Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Juan Lagares, Lucas Duda, Wilmer Flores, Daniel Murphy, Steven Matz (among others, like R.A. Dickey) have in common.

They were all signed by Omar Minaya, the former Mets General Manager who now works for the Players Association.

But Minaya hasn’t been a member of the Mets front office in nearly five years now, so he could only watch from afar to see how tall the seeds he planted could grow.

Minaya who was hovering around the halls of the Blue Jays clubhouse on Monday at Citi Field, credited the current Mets regime for developing the players he originally secured.

“I don’t think of them as my guys,” Minaya told Kevin Kernan of the New York Post. “I think of them as the organization’s guys and I think Sandy and [assistants] Paul [DePodesta] and J.P. [Ricciardi] have done a great job of developing these players. It’s an organizational victory.’’

It really is a two-pronged victory. Minaya has always been a tremendous talent evaluator, and the Mets are reaping the rewards of that eye many years after he procured that talent for the Mets. But drafting and signing players is only a part of the win and, as Minaya said, Sandy Alderson and his group deserve credit for patiently developing and utilizing that talent over the last few years.

It hasn’t yet amounted to much winning as of yet, but it certainly looks like things are heading in that direction. At some point, the Mets may be able look back on Minaya’s and Alderson’s work with praise and gratitude.

  1. Say what you will about Omar– you are right, he was a tremendous talent evaluator. But when you put Tony Bernazard in charge of player development, you are shown to be a less than capable manager. Glad to see he’s doing well.
