David Wright has not played since April 14 since he strained his hamstring sliding into second base.
Since then, the hamstring has healed but he has dealt with back pain resulting from spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal cavity.
He has been in Los Angeles working with Dr. Robert Watkins and his physical therapy group in an effort to reduce the pain and inflammation while strengthen the core and lower back.
Up until today, Wright was believed to be out indefinitely, but while speaking at a veterans hospital in Brooklyn on Monday, Sandy Alderson told reporters Wright returning by the All-Star break is a, “realistic possibility,” according to Mike Vorkunov of the Star Ledger.
Of course, this can’t be considered a guarantee by any means.
There’s no telling how Wright and his back might respond once he resumes baseball activities, and it remains unclear when he might return to the team’s minor league complex in Port St. Lucie to do so. However, Alderson’s words are encouraging, as it suggests Wright is showing some positive signs in the work he is doing in Los Angeles.
But there’s also no way to know what Wright will be when and if he gets back, nor is there anyway of knowing how long it will take him to get up to speed and how much time off he will need for whatever part of the season he is able to play in.
So, while this is good and encouraging news, there’s still a lot of mystery that surrounds Wright going forward.
Mets third basemen have hit .247 (10th worst) with a .316 on-base percentage (13th best) and .356 slugging percentage (fourth worst) in 2015.
One response to “David Wright could return by the All-Star break”
Wow! Unfortunately, Sandy’s convoluted, contradicting statement concerning DW’s return lack any credibility. He’s like the boy who cried “Wolf”— JUST jerked around on this star player’s condition one too many times— plus, our expectation of David Wrights return, lends itself to the rationale why Sandy doesn’t spend any money to replace him with a major leaguer….of course, where there’s life there’s hope…
