On Saturday, the Mets claimed OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis off of waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. The Mets did not announce a corresponding roster move to add Nieuwenhuis back to the active roster on Sunday.
A source has indicated to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York the Mets will waive Nieuwenhuis again with hopes he passes through, at which point he can be outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas.
This is the only reason the Mets would have to add Nieuwenhuis back to the mix. The 51s could use some depth in the outfield at Triple-A, and there’s really no reason for him to be added to the active roster over anyone else, considering how he’s performed at this level for two teams this season.
Nieuwenhuis is just 6-for-60 with 26 strikeouts between the Mets and Angels this season.
