With the hot hitting Blue Jays coming to town and the Mets having spent much of their bullpen over the last several days, the Mets are making a surprising move from within their minor league system.

RHP Akeel Morris is en route from Florida to New York and will be activated tomorrow in time for the team’s game against Toronto.

Morris, 22, is 0-1 with a 1.69 ERA with 13 saves in 24 games for Single-A St. Lucie of the Florida State League this year. He’s surrendered 11 hits, issued 14 walks and struck out 46. He was named to the mid-season Florida State League All-Star team.

The Mets did not announce a corresponding roster move on Sunday night, but will do so before Monday’s game.

There’s no question the Mets need to fortify their bullpen, and Morris is an exciting power -armed talent inside the minor league system. He’s on the 40-man roster, so the Mets do not have to cut someone to make room for him. This will probably be a brief cup of coffee for Morris, but time will tell.

But the question is, who might be jettisoned from the active roster?

Perhaps they would consider sending down either Jack Leathersich or Hansel Robles to accommodate Morris? That might be the most logical conclusion to draw, considering they really just need to get a fresh arm in here and they come with the greatest roster flexibility.

Then again, maybe the Mets will go even shorter on the bench again for the week, potentially optioning Eric Campbell back to Las Vegas and then sending Morris back to the minors when Daniel Murphy returns. But that could really hand cuff the Mets at least until they can use a designated hitter on Wednesday, especially if the Mets need to ride their bullpen even harder against that tough Toronto lineup.

It’s worth mentioning Dillon Gee has options left and he cannot refuse an assignment yet. But that is probably not what’s about to transpire.
