The Mets made yet another surprising roster move on Sunday morning.
The club announced they’ve activated Dillon Gee from the bereavement list and Ruben Tejada from the paternity list.
It comes as no surprise the Mets optioned Daniel Muno back to Las Vegas. However, to make room for Gee, the Mets optioned Anthony Recker to Las Vegas as well.
That means, Kevin Plawecki will serve as Travis d’Arnaud’s backup, which is a surprise considering Plawecki is one of the game’s best catching prospects, but he isn’t going to be playing on a regular basis in this role.
That’s not to say Recker’s performance has warranted a roster spot, but he’s a veteran and does what a backup is supposed to do. Playing infrequently could dwarf Plawecki’s development, and certainly doesn’t do much for his value should the Mets look to move him in a trade.
Terry Collins said on Sunday morning Plawecki will initially get adequate playing time while they ease d’Arnaud back into a full-time role.
When that process is complete, they will reevaluate the roster.
Even so, it’s bizarre.
